Mitch Hoffman & David Brann were approached by St. Jude’s Charities, who operate a research hospital in Memphis, TN. St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Their researchers and doctors work together to turn laboratory breakthroughs into lifesaving treatments for children from across the United States and around the world.
They selected 5 local Denver artists to take drawings from children in art therapy in the hospital, and turn them into 3d sculptures, to be displayed at various fundraising galas across the nation. We selected a piece done by a 9 year old cancer patient of colorful mountains and clouds, which we cut out of flat steel in numerous layers that were then carefully painted and glued together with industrial epoxy. These layers were then bolted to a large steel base.
The finished piece was shown at their charity gala at the Denver Art Museum; the event raised almost $750,000. The mountain piece was then shown at another gala that summer in Minneapolis MN, and will eventually be placed as a permanent installation in the hospital in Tennessee.
