Lifelong Project

about this project

Mitch Hoffman has forged a unique path in the realm of art education by blending his passion for welding with a commitment to sustainability and creativity. His journey has taken him from transforming scrap metal into art to inspiring young minds through hands-on projects that emphasize artistic expression and environmental stewardship.

One of Mitch’s first notable projects involved collaborating with Paddington Station Preschool, where he crafted two kinetic sculptures using discarded bicycles. These sculptures not only beautify the school's environment, allow the children to play, but also serve as a tangible lesson in upcycling and reusing materials. By repurposing old bike parts, Mitch demonstrated to the children the transformative power of creativity and the potential of seemingly obsolete objects.

Moving beyond preschoolers, Mitch & his shop partner Katy extended their influence to middle school students at Embark Education in North Denver. Here, they engaged students in a comprehensive art project centered around designing and constructing kinetic sculptures from old bike parts. This initiative not only fostered artistic skills but also encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving as the students navigated the technical and aesthetic challenges of creating functional art pieces. The 5 final pieces were displayed at an art show at Pinwheel Coffee Shop, a non-profit space that employs local students for vocational tech.

At Trinidad High School in Colorado, Mitch Hoffman continued his mission to integrate art and welding into education by working with high school students on scrap metal art projects. Through hands-on workshops and mentorship, Hoffman empowered the students to explore their creativity while learning practical skills in metal fabrication. These projects not only enriched the school’s art curriculum but also provided students with a deeper understanding of sustainability and the environmental impact of their artistic choices.

Mitch Hoffman’s approach to art education transcends traditional boundaries by incorporating elements of environmental consciousness and practical skill development. His initiatives not only inspire young learners to think creatively but also instill a sense of responsibility towards the environment. By utilizing discarded materials and emphasizing the beauty of repurposing, Hoffman encourages his students to see art as a medium for both personal expression and positive societal impact.
